How Aspire to Teach works

Step 1

Check your eligibility

To apply for the Aspire to Teach Program scholarship, you'll need to be currently working in a school support staff role in an Eligible Placement School, in New South Wales, Tasmania, or the Northern Territory. You'll also need to meet course entry requirements.

  • First, visit the My School website and search for your school using your exact school name or suburb.
  • Next, click on your school name or View School Profile to see if your school has an Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage value (ICSEA value) equal to or below 1000. If it does, your school is on the program eligibility list. If the ICSEA value is more than 1000, you are not eligible to apply.

This depends on your previous qualifications and what teaching areas you would like to specialise in while you study. Have a bachelor’s degree (in any area)? You can study our two-year bachelor's or master's of teaching* – with a focus on either primary or secondary. Or, if you’ve partially completed any courses, and receive credit when you commence your bachelor's or master's of teaching, you can use the Bachelor of Educational Studies as a pathway to either of the above-mentioned courses.

Our Bachelor of Educational Studies can be completed in three years of full-time study. But good news! If you’re eligible, you can get 64 credit points toward the course. This is equivalent to eight subjects, or one year of full-time study – meaning you can finish the course in just two years (full-time). After graduation, you can then complete a one-year bachelor's or master's of teaching*.

*These courses are completely online except for some on-campus intensive subjects and professional experience placement requirements. Two years is the full-time equivalent.

A full-time study load is typically eight subjects per year of study, which you’ll complete over two or three sessions. The course can also be undertaken part-time, which is four or six subjects a year over two or three sessions.

Yes, participants are required to be currently employed in a school support role to participate in the program. This includes Teachers' Aides, School Learning Support Officers, Aboriginal Education Officers, and Education Assistants.

This depends on your previous qualifications.
The 64-point (eight subjects) credit package is awarded for completing:

  • Any recognised vocational diploma, or relevant Certificate III/IV, including:
    • Cert III in Education Support (or School Based Education Support)
    • Cert IV in Education Support (or School Based Education Support)
    • Any Diploma

Plus, any previously completed university subjects can be assessed for further credit.

Yes, to be eligible for our program, you must be working in an Eligible Placement School in New South Wales, Tasmania, or the Northern Territory.

You can complete all your studies online, except for the professional experience placement requirements and any subjects with compulsory intensive schools.

Remember: you're always welcome to attend any campus in person. Our campus facilities are available to use, even if you study online.

There are very few intensive schools for subjects in either of the primary or secondary degree pathways. But whether or not you'll need to attend is based on the subjects you choose and the Key Learning Area/Teaching Area you are specialising in. You must attend an intensive school if it's required by your subjects (exemptions apply for eligible students).

Each subject is different. For example, some science subjects, like Chemical Fundamentals (CHM108), might require you to complete an intensive school, which takes four days. But, you could complete your studies in Primary Science without needing to do an intensive school – it all depends on the subjects you choose. If you specialise in Creative Arts; English; Human Society and Its Environment; Mathematics; or Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, you can study completely online.

Remember: you’re always welcome to attend any campus in person. Our campus facilities are available to use, even if you study online.
